One of my most consistent forms of income from my blog (not this one) since the beginning has been from the ads on my sites. Most people when starting a new blog start with Google Adsense. I began using AdSense when my blog was two months old. I didn’t make very much at first because you have to make $100 before you can get a payout and I definitely didn’t make that my first month with them, but by my second month I made $250 and it has gone up since then.
I can’t guarantee that you’ll make what I make monthly, but I can show you what has been working for me. If you’re just starting out in blogging, your initial earnings will be small, but as your blog grows, so should your AdSense income.
Ads definitely should not be the first thing you worry about when setting up your blog, but once you’re creating amazing content, networking with others on a regular basis and are ready to start earning money, consider applying to AdSense.
There are several other ad networks out there. I don’t have experience with these, but here’s a list that I know fellow bloggers have used.
Media.net – I’ve used them in the past, but didn’t make as much as I do with AdSense.
The Blogger Network
Best places to put the ads on your blog
I’ve found that there are some key spots on your blog that are prime real estate; meaning that these are great spots to place your ads.
Above your posts—when someone first lands on your site, one of the first things they’ll see is this ad. It is above the fold which means that someone can see it with scrolling the page and advertisers like ads that are above the fold.
Top of your sidebar—This one is above the fold too, so it is noticed quickly.
Bottom of your posts– This one gets noticed once people are done reading your post.
Earn more with Adsense’s Custom Channels
You can possible earn more if you set up your AdSense ads into custom channels. One way you can attract brands to put their ads on your site is by telling them what kinds of ads you’d like. This is where Custom Channels come in.
Custom Channels allows you to customize what kinds of ads you really want to appear on your site. Currently I have 3 different ads on my site from AdSense. Each of these are in 5 different custom channels.
Once you have your ads set up, let’s get your channels setup too. To get started, you’ll need to log in to your Google AdSense account. Click on My Ads. On the left-hand side and then click on Custom Channels. To create a custom channel, click +New Custom Channel.
At the top you’ll see the Custom Channel name. Name your channel with a description so you know what it is being used for. My channel name is MIHT_savemoney 728×90. I named it this so that I could keep track of what site I was working with (because I have 2 sites), my topic and ad size.
ONE | This shows you all the different types of Ad Units that I have on my sites.
TWO | This shows you which ad units that I have this particular Custom Channel assigned to.
THREE | Click that box so that Advertisers know that you are looking for specific things to target on your site.
FOUR | If your particular ad unit appears on every page of your site, then say that. Be specific as to where each ad can be seen.
FIVE | Select where on your site your ad can be seen.
SIX | This is the most important part. This is where you tell the advertisers what kinds of ads you are looking for. This is what I wrote as my description for this particular ad: “A 728×90 leaderboard ad appearing above the fold on all pages. Shopping, Frugal, Coupons, clothing, jewelry, money”
Be very specific. Be sure to put the specific items that I’m looking for in an ad. I’m basically telling advertisers that if they sell any of those types of items, I want their ads running on my site.
Like I mentioned before, I am currently running 3 ads on my site. Each of those ads are in 5 different channels, so I have 15 different channels.
To give you an example of custom channels, here is a list of my custom channels for one of my 728×90 ads.
MIHT_money_footer 728×90 – A 728×90 leaderboard ad appearing below the fold, at the bottom of posts and seen on all pages. Shopping, Frugal, Coupons, clothing, jewelry, money
MIHT_DIY_footer 728×90 – A 728×90 leaderboard ad appearing below the fold, at the bottom of posts and seen on all pages. Living, DIY, style, fashion, crafts, kitchen, shopping
MIHT_recipes_footer 728×90 – A 728×90 leaderboard ad appearing below the fold, at the bottom of posts and seen on all pages. Recipes, food, shopping, kitchen, organization

I hope this helps you maximize your earnings with your ads. I know it helped me with my earning on Google AdSense. Please note that I cannot guarantee results or any specific outcomes that come from using the methods outlined above.
